Thanksgiving Sunday Hymn Sing

This Weekend: “Thanksgiving Sunday Hymn Sing”

Scriptures: Psalm 95:1-7, and Colossians 3:12-17

The Psalmist writes: “O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!” (Psalm 95)

And later “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing.” (Psalm 100)

Music has always been a part of the Methodist movement and tradition. You may know that Charles Wesley was a prolific hymn writer. To go with their early hymnals, John Wesley issued 7 rules for Singing to his followers, which included instruction to “Sing lustily – and with good courage. Beware of singing as if you were half-dead or half-asleep; but lift up your voice with strength.” But also cautioned: “Sing modestly – do not bawl so as to be heard above or distinct from the rest of the congregation that you may not destroy the harmony, but strive to unite your voices together so as to make one melodious sound.”

Sunday we will seek to follow this advice and celebrate Thanksgiving with a good old fashion hymn-sing. Bring your favorites from the United Methodist Hymnal or the Faith We Sing and Pat Harry will lead us in song. Pastor Christopher is recovering from illness, but we will gather in praise and thanksgiving with song, and you are invited to join in worship and celebration at 10:30am at 301 S. National, coming just as you are, with your questions, doubts and hopes - and to experience the transformative, healing love and grace of Christ - which makes us whole. Visit www.firstumcfortscott.org/newvisitors for more information on what to expect.

As we do each Sunday, we will seek to: “Let the word of Christ dwell in [us] richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.”(Colossians 3)

We are excited to have about 30 nativities registered and look forward to welcoming our neighbors in to see the collection. We can still add some space so if you meant to register and didn’t by the original deadline, there is still a chance. See https://www.firstumcfortscott.org/nativity-showcase for details.

Plan to visit to see them all Friday, Dec. 1 from 5-8pm and Saturday, Dec. 2 10-2pm.
