Worship Preview 4.10.22 Palms and Passion (Palm Sunday)
Scriptures: Psalm 118, John 12:1-36. Pastor Christopher Eshelman preaching.
Jesus approaches Jerusalem. We celebrate one of the highlights of the year - singing Hosanna and waving palms, knowing full well that we, like the disciples, fall short - and knowing that nothing can separate us from the love of God because of what Christ has done for us. Perhaps you have some questions about that. Jesus own disciples, with all they had seen, heard and done firsthand, doubted and had questions. Holy Week is not about having all the answers, but engaging with the story of salvation. So on Sunday we will sing and wave palms, and consider what Lazarus and Martha’s sister Mary understands, that the other disciples don’t quite grasp yet. We will watch and listen as she anoints Jesus. We will hear the response from Judas and from Jesus and ponder our own. Then on Thursday, April 14th at 7pm we will remember the last supper and Jesus humble service and example. On Friday, April 15th at 7pm we will hold a service of Tenebrae, darkness. We will acknowledge the disciple’s denials and abandonment and Christ’s ultimate sacrifice. We call the Friday on which Jesus was crucified good because of the reality of Easter. These difficult and challenging days will prepare us to truly enter into the light of Easter on the 17th, a glorious celebration that love has already won; that Jesus’ faith and service have already broken the power of sin and even death. Bring your whole self to this holy week, bring your joys and your sorrows, and encounter Jesus anew - in laughter, tears, and a call to be the church together in the world, here and now. Wherever you are on your journey, whatever questions you have, whatever you’ve done - Easter is coming. You are invited to journey with us, just as you are - and experience the transformative love and grace of Christ.
