Treasurer Job Outline
First UMC Fort Scott, KS – October 2025
MISSION The mission of First UMC Fort Scott is “to share the good news of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and to exemplify the love of God by knowing Christ, growing in Christ serving Christ and sharing Christ.”
Some key guiding principles:
They will exhibit a willingness to acknowledge and adhere to the doctrine and polity of the United Methodist Church and to work within parameters as defined by the Church.
They will keep all matters of the church and finances in strict confidence while making sure those authorized to know have the right information at the right time. They will proactively work with other staff on documentation and records retention.
They will demonstrate exceptional accountability and clarity in administering financial expense records, using the best practices of funds balance accounting while maintaining good boundaries and avoiding conflicts of interest.
This job description is basic and outlines the expectations for the performance of the position and does not cover all the possible functions of the job. Knowledge of programs such as Church Windows/Quick Books, Microsoft Office, and similar is helpful, but training is available for the right person.
Pay rate to be determined
SPRC will do an evaluation after or near a 120-day probationary period.
Schedule is highly flexible and will be established with the successful candidate. We anticipate approximately 8-12 hours per month, very occasionally more (end of year reports in January, for example) focused around being ready for payroll and making and necessary bill payments by due dates.
Payroll checks go out no later than the 1st and 15th of each month (usually the day before, sometimes earlier if they fall on a weekend), so routine treasurer hours are a day or two ahead of that, but most tasks can be done earlier as needed to accommodate travel or other conflicts. This position can work from the office or home as long as records are kept organized, secure, and readily accessible by authorized people.
We currently use Quickbooks but are open to other options - clarity and routine availability of financial reports are a key consideration.
